Sri Lanka Gemstone Experiences
Sri Lanka is one of the most fascinating gemstone countries in the world, but much of the real gem trade exists quietly behind the scenes.
Over the last ten years, I’ve spent time travelling around the world through mining regions, local markets, cutting workshops, and trading towns, building relationships and learning directly from the people who work within the industry every day.
These field experiences are for travellers who want authentic access to Sri Lanka’s gemstone world beyond the typical tourist stops.
I'm planning to spend time in Sri Lanka again from late 2026 to early 2027 (October to February/March). Limited field experiences and sourcing support may be available during this time.
Not a Staged Tour
This is not a staged “gem tour” or a polished luxury excursion.
Depending on timing, location, and your interests, we may visit:
-
local gem markets
-
cutting workshops
-
mining areas (shaft, open-pit and river-mining)
-
gem and mineral museums
-
trusted dealers
-
trade hubs
-
or places connected to Sri Lanka’s remarkable gemstone history.
This experience will be mostly outdoors, practical and suited to people interested in sourcing gemstones with independent guidance on the ground.
A More Human Experience of the Gem Trade
You might simply be curious about sapphires and the journey from mine to market. Or you may be a collector, jeweller, designer, or traveller hoping to better understand the trade before making a purchase.
Every experience is informal, flexible, and shaped around real life in Sri Lanka, not a fixed tourist script.
There may be long conversations over a cup of Sri Lankan tea, unexpected detours, 3-4 hour drives, busy trading offices, or moments where nothing happens quickly at all. That’s part of the experience.
