Sri Lanka Gemstone Experiences
Go behind the scenes of Sri Lanka's gemstone industry and gain the confidence to understand, buy and appreciate gemstones like an insider.
Experience the gem trade through the eyes of an independent gemmologist with nearly a decade of on-the-ground experience and trusted local relationships.
Sri Lanka is one of the most fascinating gemstone countries in the world, but much of the real gem trade exists quietly behind the scenes.
Over the last ten years, I’ve spent time travelling around the world through mining regions, local markets, cutting workshops, and trading towns, building relationships and learning directly from the people who work within the industry every day.
These field experiences are for travellers who want authentic access to Sri Lanka’s gemstone world beyond the typical tourist stops.
I’ll be based in Sri Lanka from 2 November 2026 until April 2027, with a limited number of private gemstone experiences available during this period.

"I signed up for Kim’s Gemstone Experience, Bespoke Expedition because I was worried about buying the wrong stone or paying too much. Her meticulous eye, patience and expert guidance gave me complete confidence, turning what could have been a stressful purchase into an enjoyable experience. I left with gemstones knowing I'd paid a fair price and the knowledge to buy with confidence on my next trip."
Meet the People Behind Sri Lanka's Gem Trade
People. Passion. Expertise
The stories behind every gemstone are just as fascinating as the stones themselves. Meet some of the remarkable people who make Sri Lanka's gem industry unique. While the individuals pictured may vary, you'll gain genuine insight into the expertise, traditions and livelihoods that shape one of the world's most respected gemstone-producing countries.
More Than a Gemstone Tour
This isn’t a package tour with a fixed itinerary. It’s a personalised, immersive experience designed around your interests and guided by nearly a decade of my experience building relationships within Sri Lanka’s gemstone industry.
Whether you’re an aspiring gemmologist, collector or simply fascinated by gemstones, you’ll gain a genuine insight into how the trade really works. Depending on your goals and what’s happening during your visit, your experience could include exploring gem markets, meeting miners and traders, visiting mining areas, watching gemstones being cut and polished, and learning how quality, value and trust shape every stage of the journey.
No two experiences are the same. The gem trade changes every day, so each itinerary is tailored to create the best possible opportunities for learning and discovery.
If you choose to stay in my Sri Lankan home, the experience continues beyond the day’s activities. Over breakfast, beside the pool or while planning tomorrow’s adventure, there’s always time to ask questions, share ideas and deepen your understanding of the fascinating world of gemstones.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any previous gemstone knowledge?
Not at all. Whether you’re completely new to gemstones or starting to work within the jewellery industry, every experience is tailored to your level of knowledge and interests.
Who are these experiences designed for?
They’re ideal for collectors, aspiring gemstone professionals and anyone fascinated by the journey of a gemstone from mine to market.
Are the experiences private?
Yes. Every experience is private and tailored for individuals or couples, allowing complete flexibility around your interests, learning objectives and pace.
Can we visit gemstone mines?
Where possible, yes. Mine visits depend on factors such as weather, mining activity, local availability and access permissions. Because every experience is bespoke, opportunities are discussed when planning your itinerary.
Can I buy gemstones during the experience?
Yes, if you wish. There is absolutely no obligation to buy. If you do decide to purchase gemstones, I’ll help you understand quality, ask the right questions and buy with greater confidence.
What’s included?
Every itinerary is different, so inclusions vary. After your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive a Personalised Experience Plan detailing exactly what’s included.
How much does it cost?
Private gemstone experiences start from £1950 (3-day Origin Experience). As every experience is bespoke, the final investment depends on the duration of your stay, accommodation, activities and learning objectives.
Can I stay with you during my visit?
Yes, I'd be delighted to host you. Guests have the option of staying in my Sri Lankan base, enjoying a comfortable air-conditioned double room, Wi-Fi, swimming pool and the opportunity to continue learning in a relaxed setting beyond the day’s activities.
When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka can be visited throughout much of the year, but for the best gemstone experience I generally recommend January to April. These months typically offer dry weather in the main gem-producing regions, making travel more comfortable and increasing the likelihood of visiting active mining areas.
I generally avoid planning experiences during the main south-west monsoon (May to September), as heavy rainfall can affect mine access, road conditions and mining activity. October to December can still work well, but you'll need to be more flexible around mining activities as weather can still be unsettled with periods of heavy rain and flooding. If your focus is on buying, learning and meeting traders, you can still have a good time, all year round.
How do I book?
Every experience begins with a conversation. We’ll discuss your interests, travel dates and what you’d like to gain from your visit before I create a personalised experience plan. Get in touch: kim@gemstonedetective.com or WhatsApp on
+44 793 920 6713.
Why isn’t there a fixed itinerary?
Because the gemstone trade doesn’t operate to a timetable. Markets change daily, miners move between sites and the most valuable opportunities often arise through trusted relationships and local knowledge. Rather than following a rigid schedule, every experience is designed to make the most of what’s happening during your visit.
