With this COVID crisis keeping us cooped up indoors, many of you will be looking for new ways to utilise your time. Perhaps you are thinking about writing a book.
Funnily enough, yesterday, one of my readers, Kathy, emailed me to say that she is thinking about writing a book on pink diamonds. How wonderful! I was really touched that she contacted me, asking “Where do I start?” It’s a great question and I’m so happy to be able to share my experience with you.
When I first came up with the idea of writing a book series, it just felt right – in that instant I knew I had discovered my purpose! I was so excited… and yet had absolutely no idea about how or where to start. Without a care in the world, I just launched myself into it. I decided to take a chance on myself!
To be honest, it’s been a steep learning curve and an extremely expensive one. I have made so many mistakes and my budget to write a series of 15 books only got me as far as publishing 6 books.
Firstly, I have no regrets about the money. It’s been worth every penny! Yes, it has been an expensive education, but so is going to university.
Secondly, writing this series of books has been completely life-changing! I’ve travelled the world. I’ve made new friends and contacts. I’ve had a tremendous ‘in the field’ education! I’m living my life with 100% passion and I’m very fortunate to have a husband who understands what I want to achieve.
Thirdly, I am helping people who share the same passion. There must be millions of people in the gem trade worldwide and even more people who just love tinkering with gemstones as a hobby.
When I started out on this journey, I had no idea where it would take me. I had no idea of the challenges that would follow, no idea whether the books would sell. I just knew I had to take the chance. Probably the most important driving force for me is the thought that I’ll be leaving a legacy for future generations of gem learners!
I firmly believe that there’s a book inside all of us. If you have a hobby or interest, I’m sure you can write about the subject. Search your soul – what are you passionate about? What knowledge do you have that you can share with others? What do you really enjoy doing in life?
