About seven years ago, I found myself standing in the sapphire trading centre of Nivithigala, Sri Lanka. I was there with a gemstone buyer and her partner, an experienced gem cutter from Myanmar. My role that day was simple: watch, listen and learn.

As we moved through the market, a parcel of rough sapphire caught their attention. Not a beautiful sapphire. Not sparkling sapphire. Just two small pieces of rough geuda sapphire.

To an inexperienced eye, they looked unremarkable. Then the negotiation began. After careful examination, discussion and calculation, a deal was struck.

The price? Around $10,000 if my memory serves me correctly. I remember standing there thinking, How can anyone possibly spend that much money on two small rough stones?

The answer was simple. They were not buying what the stones looked like that day. They were buying potential…the potential beauty hidden within the rough, the potential quality that might emerge after treatment and cutting, and the potential value that expertise could unlock.

What fascinated me most was that nobody in the market was guessing. The buyer had spent years selecting the ideal rough. The cutter had spent years unlocking the potential hidden inside stones. Together, they possessed knowledge that allowed them to see something I could not.

That day taught me an important lesson. Expertise is not knowing more facts. Expertise is seeing what others miss.

The most expensive mistake in the gemstone trade is assuming that every sapphire reveals its value at first glance. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it absolutely does not. And that is why buying rough sapphire is one of the most specialised areas of the gemstone industry.

The Moral of the Story

The lesson for engagement ring buyers is surprisingly relevant. Many people assume they can judge a sapphire simply by comparing photographs online or looking at a few specifications on a certificate. Yet some of the most important qualities of a gemstone can only be understood through experience.

You don’t need to become a gemmologist before buying a sapphire engagement ring. But it does help to work with somebody who has spent years learning how to recognise quality, value and beauty beyond what appears on paper.

Because sometimes the difference between an ordinary sapphire and an extraordinary one is not obvious until someone points it out.

Sapphire Engagement Ring Guide: The Biggest Mistake People Make When Buying

Believe it or not, sometimes even gemmologists get it wrong. A few years ago in Tanzania, I bought a rough bluish sapphire from a trusted trader in Arusha. I knew the risks.

Anyone who buys rough sapphire knows there are no guarantees. Until the stone is cut, nobody knows exactly what is hiding inside. Still, I saw enough potential to take the chance.

The rough was handed to a skilled Tanzanian cutter, and I waited to see what would emerge.

The finished sapphire weighed around 5 carats. It was unheated, which is always desirable from a rarity perspective. But the final result wasn’t what I had hoped for. The blue colour was much paler than I expected. More importantly, fine silk within the stone reduced its transparency and sparkle. It wasn’t lifeless, but it lacked the colour and vibrancy I had imagined when I first held the rough in my hand.

Today, it remains a valuable sapphire. It is unheated, a respectable size and still possesses qualities that many collectors appreciate. But if I am honest? I am not in love with it.

Could heating improve the clarity and colour? Possibly. Would it become a more attractive gemstone? Quite possibly.

But that experience taught me an important lesson. When buying a sapphire, it is easy to fall in love with what a gemstone might become.

What matters is whether you love what it actually is.

I see buyers make the same mistake when searching for engagement rings. They focus on possibilities, treatments, future value or what somebody else tells them they should appreciate.

Instead, start with a simpler question:

If nothing about this sapphire changed, would I still love it?

If the answer is yes, you are probably looking at the right stone. The biggest mistake is assuming there is a single “best” sapphire. There is not. The best sapphire for one person may be completely wrong for another.

Some buyers prioritise vivid colour. Others prioritise rarity. Others want a gemstone connected to a meaningful place or experience.

The goal is not to find the perfect sapphire. The goal is to find the sapphire that feels right for you. That distinction changes everything.

How to Choose a Sapphire You Will Still Love in 30 Years

Before selecting a sapphire engagement ring, ask yourself:
